We provide free tastings for people intending to purchase our wines. Should you decide not to purchase then a charge of $5 per taster will be charged
Our aim is to make your trip to our cellar door at Severnlea relaxing and entertaining - through wine, music and fun.
Our wines incline to European styles that favour elegance over power. Our reds are always fruit driven; the whites are delicately mineralised.
Whilst wines are very important (and occasionally even serious), we are disposed to make the cellar door experience as informative and as much fun as possible.
There's a story for every wine and a song for every occasion, though we don't do funerals.
To get technical for a moment, Whiskey Gully Wines produces elegant, fruit-driven reds and lean, well balanced whites: Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colombard, Chardonnay and Black Muscat varieties. The Granite Belt’s cool climate and granitic, well drained soils are ideal for premium wine grape production.
We planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in 1997. In 1999 more Cabernet Sauvignon was added along with Colombard. A further planting of all of the mentioned varieties took place in 2005. It was just 100 vines, intended originally as a showpiece but, in 2012, they were grafted with Black Muscat. We also grafted half an acre to Malbec that year.
Our Flagship wines - Black Rod Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay - have become well known, and Yes Minister (Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec) has joined them in recent years. Colombard is popular as an aromatic style white table wine as well as the aged, sweet wine style originally planned.
The original vineyard plantings are mature and provide reliable vintages of excellent quality fruit. The vines are hand-tended and productive.
Through all these years Rod MacPherson has continued to be our winemaker with occasional assistance from his partner Phillippa who was originally our principal winemaker until she took a more important job - bringing up their lovely daughter.
Their tastes in wine and ours match well and it is wonderful to see Rod get the very best from the beautiful grapes the vineyard produces.
The following are wines we have produced over the years. Because we are boutique - a nice way of saying small - we let the grapes tell us what to do with them each year so we produce wines as opportunity arises.
